3 Unit 1 - EFFECTIVE WAYS OF DEALING WITH TEXTS (reading) Part 1 – Reading books and journal articles Task 1. Introduction A brief information is given on what will be studied in this course, the need for effective reading in the learning process and professional activity is explained. INTRODUCTION Every learner wants to master the skills that will help him: become smarter and more efficient, understand information, speeches and professional discourse, communicate with other people, write logical papers. It is all about your progress in studying English for a degree. You know, that language activity includes 4 main aspects: reading, listening, writing and speaking. When we talk about learning and professional communication, we highlight the common and most important principles and rules of these four types of activities that allow us to work successfully with foreign sources, to perceive and express information in a foreign language. Thus, speaking about professional communication, we have in mind an understanding of information by ear (lecture, report, scientific film, etc.), reading literature (primary sources, books, articles, monographs, etc.), writing texts and documents (abstracts, motivating letters, reports, articles, qualification papers, business letters) and presentation (presentations, reports, participation in discussions). We will provide you with some useful tips and examples that will help you prepare for speech activities more effectively. Task 2. Reading and understanding Given information presents the types of professional literature and useful reading skills
4 Read the text, study the types of professional literature and useful reading skills. READING and UNDERSTANDING Professional literature includes major components often divided according to the their usage aim: 1) Text books, reference books, handbooks of data are used to have a good start for understanding a new field. 2) Review articles and monographs of similar work done in a particular area of study give an overview of recent work in the field, useful as an indication of key issues in the professional field. 3) Journal articles in current literature, which present the details from original studies, useful evidence or illustrations on which to base theories or opinions. 4) Scientific abstracts and citations, which give the information in a field with reference details so that you can find and read the studies that are most relevant to your work. One of the most important skills you need to develop in this wide field of written information is the skill of reading. For modern students reading is one of the most boring activities. Nevertheless, it remains the main source of information, intellectual and personal development. Therefore, we have identified the most problematic areas and concerns in professional reading for students, which include: having too much to read, losing comprehension when trying to read more quickly, being slow readers. So, we want to give you some tips on how to make the process of reading professional literature easier and more effective: use different reading strategies to match your purpose for reading each text, prioritize your reading so that you read what is most important first, sort out the things which are most relevant, follow and understand the meaning of a complex argument, use professional jargon, deal with contradictory information or views,
5 make meaning out of tables, graphs and other diagrams. Task 3 Reading strategies The information on reading strategies and their usage algorithm is given in the format of text and tables. Read the text on reading strategies, make sure you remember the information. Since there is a mass of professional literature in the modern world, the reader has to carry out a critical analysis of information, use certain strategies of effective reading. You, the reader, must learn to appraise the work of others objectively. Here are some more detailed strategies which may help you get the most from the time and develop your own style of reading and work out your own strategies. There are three common types of reading strategies: skimming, scanning and in-depth reading. Skimming and scamming are fast reading techniques. Skimming: at fast rate a reader can gain the general idea. The necessary skill is to find quickly all important or key words of the text and then try to get the idea. It is good for selecting relevant information. While skimming you go through the whole text. It is used when you go through the document for the first time. Scanning is used for searching some specific information. The skill of scanning involves pattern recognition technique. Many people use it searching for some information in smartphones. While scanning you search for the specific text or pattern. Scanning is used for the text which the reader is aware of. For example, you want to find a particular quotation in the text. In-depth reading: it is a detailed reading for understanding all concepts and arguments the text contains. It is used for deeper understanding and comprehension of information, when you research or read on difficult problematics. Remember the algorithm of purpose reading. There are several common purposes for professional reading for which different styles can be used:
6 Reading Purpose Redaer's style Reader's actions to locate some specific information in the text, to decide which sections of books or articles best match different sections of your plan for an assignment skim reading run your eye quickly over the text picking up only enough to recognize what the text is about until you see a relevant piece of information to inform yourself generally, say before a lecture or before making a plan for an assignment on a new topic read steadily without noting get the big picture to gather material for an assignment read sections very carefully, making notes make notes about specific ideas and examples you can use, skipping over material that is not relevant to completely understand a particular experiment, say, where you have to make a presentation on an article to your class read the aims and methods first, making notes as a diagram make a diagram or a map, then read the results Table 1 Purposes of reading Frame working essential texts Reading an essential book or an article starts with a mental framework for the author's views, facts and ideas.
