PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT CONTINUOUS The present simple tense is a grammatical tense used to describe actions, states, or habits that are generally true, habitual, or repeated. It is often used to talk about routines, facts, and permanent situations. To form the present simple tense in its positive, negative, and interrogative forms, you typically use the base form of the verb (without any suffixes) for most subjects, except for third-person singular subjects (he, she, it), where an “-s” or “-es” is added to the base form of the verb. Positive form: Subject + Base form of the verb (+ -s/-es for third-person singular) Negative form: Subject + Do/Does not + Base form of the verb Interrogative form: Do/Does + Subject + Base form of the verb? Here are some examples: Positive form: • The customs officer checks passports and visas at the airport. • We inspect incoming shipments for contraband items. • She works at the customs office and handles import documentation. Negative form: • The customs officer does not ask for additional information unless necessary. • They do not seize goods without proper justification. • He does not charge excessive customs fees. Interrogative form: • Do customs officers have the authority to open packages? • Does the customs department enforce strict regulations on prohibited items? • Do you need any specific qualifications to work in customs? The present simple tense has several meanings and uses. Here are the main meanings associated with the present simple: General or Permanent Truths: The present simple is used to express facts, statements, or truths that are always true, regardless of when they occur. Example: The sun rises in the east.
