I PURITANI. DRAMATIS PERS0N2E. Valton (Lord Gautier Walton, Puritan') ... ... ... Basso. Giorgio (Sir George, Puritan) ... .. ... Basso. Arturo Talbo (Lord Arthur Talbot, Cavalier) ... ... Tenore. Riccardo^Sir-Richard Forth, Puritan) ... ... Baritono. Bruno (Sir Bruno Robertson, Puritan) ... ... ... Tenore. Enrichetta (Henrietta of France, Widow of Charles I.)... Soprano. Elvira (Elvira, Paw/hler of Lord Walton) ... ... ... Soprano. Coro diPuritani e Cavalieri, Dame, Contadini e Contadine, etc. The plot of I Puritani is as follows:—Sir Richard Forth, a Puritan officer, has been accepted by Lord Walton, father of Elvira, as suitor for her hand. The addresses of Sir Richard, however, are not acceptable to the lady who has disposed of her heart to Lord Arthur Talbot, a cavalier nobleman. By the intercession of Sir George, a retired Puritan colonel, uncle to Elvira, the betrothal is set aside, and Arthur is accepted by Lord Walton as the affianced of his daughter. The marriage between Elvira and Arthur is to take place in the fortress of Plymouth, where Elvira is staying with her uncle, and where Sir Richard is officiating as colonel of the garrison. Arriving at the fortress, Arthur discovers by accident, in the person of a female prisoner, Henrietta, widow of Charles the First. His loyalty and attachment to the Stuarts induce him to aid the Queen in her escape, and he flies with her at the moment his own nuptials were about to be solemnised. Sir Richard detects the fugitives as they are leaving the fortress, but connives at their flight, the better to further his passion with Elvira. The deserted bride goes mad, thinking Arthur has forsaken her. Having escorted Henrietta to a place of safety, Arthur returns to claim his bride, Elvira’s reason is restored, and the lovers are yielding themselves up to their new-found happiness, when a party of Cromwell’s soldiers enter, arrest Arthur on a charge of high treason, and pronounce sentence of death against him. A messenger, however, arrives, who proclaims that the Stuarts are defeated, and that all political offenders are pardoned; whereupon Lord Arthur is released and marries Elvira. The scene is laid in England, in the neighbourhood of Plymouth.
