- by Papanicolau. Determines the index of maturation of the epithelium 
(for non-keratinizing epithelium normal feature  is 0/96 / 2.5 / 1.5, 
for the keratinizing - 0/60/8/32) [1].

Results of the study. Analysis of the results of cytology research 

showed that in patients with a form of a flat leukoplakia maturation 
index was 0/17,5/31/51,5±2,06(р<0,01), which corresponds to a breach of 
the maturation of the epithelium, hyperkeratosis. In patients with 
verrucous 
leukoplakia 
the 
breach 
of 
epithelial 
differentiation 

aggravated: upon the form of a plaque was revealed the following 
relation of epithelial cells 0/25/29/46 ± 1,96(р<0,01), and with 

warty form marked "left shift" - 13.5 / 17.5 / 24 / 45± 1,92 (р<0,01). 
Appearance in smears of basal cells, which are a source of 
physiological regeneration indicates about deep inflammatory processes 
in the epithelium caused by chronic injury. Cytograms of patients with 
erosive form of leukoplakia characterized by large epithelial injury 
and inflammation process: in comparison with verrucous warty form of 
leukoplakia in the smears was noted an increase in basal and parabasal 
cells to 4,0 ± 0,64 %(р<0,05) and 15,5 ± 1,31%(р<0,05), respectively.

Thus, the degree of differentiation of the epithelium may serve as 

a prognostic marker form of leukoplakia.
