PART 1. PROFESSIONS IN OUR LIFE

Unit 1. Career ladder

READING & VOCABULARY

Task 1. Read the following text quickly to get an idea of what
it is about. Ignore the missing phrases.
WHAT IS A CAREER LADDER?
The very concept of a career ladder is a process resulting from
promotions, career growth, and other successes.

Figure 1 – Presents the example of career growth from consultant to director

A typical example of a career ladder model assumes that each
rank is a job. The employee occupies it for a specific period. For each
organization, this may be a different period. A specialist begins
_________C_____________ his skill level and work experience
increase and his personal and professional qualities improve. The
person moves to the next level when his potential becomes maximum.
According to this principle, the movement takes place until the
employee reaches the highest position. Practice shows that the
duration of the most important position is not more than ten years.

Figure 2 – The basic rules you have to follow to make a brilliant career

Rule 1. Know how to do your job.
Draw attention to your work. The best way to get attention is to
break up your daily routine. If your main job is to do a few different
things every day, you will not get anything done once you start doing
more
things.
Do
not
stay
idle.
Many
people
______________________________, "I'd rather go home." If you
want to move up the career ladder, do not be that way. If you want to
succeed, you need to take care of your core responsibilities before
lunch and prepare for a promotion in the afternoon: Write proposals
and reports, look for ways to streamline workflows. Find or
__________________________, an area where no one has worked
before and where you can make a name for yourself. Gather
information that others do not know, create useful and descriptive
diagrams, etc. In this way, you can become irreplaceable. Never show
how hard it is for you. Never be frantic or panicky. No one should see
you in a hurry. Yes, you can sit at work until dawn, but you must
overcome obstacles effortlessly to other people.
Rule 2. Make a plan.
Define long-term goals. Find out the specifics of the industry
you work in. Determine what intermediate stages you need to go
through and what you want to achieve in each. Define the end goal –
this may be the position of CEO or chairman of the board, the status
of the company's owner. Define short-term goals. Which plan is shortterm
is
entirely
up
to
you.
Find
out
about
_______________________. List the skills and attributes you need to
be successful.

Rule 3. Be careful.
Study the legislation in your industry. Find out if your company
is breaking the law. In some industries, there are many small rules and
____________________ without realizing it. If you still decide to
break the law, that's up to you, but it would be a shame if you
unknowingly went to jail.
Rule 4. Remember the words of Steve Jobs every day.
Early in his career, Steve Jobs formulated a mantra that helped
him be productive: "Do not worry, just work."
Think about the cause of your worry, and you'll regain control of
the situation and relieve tension. When a troubling thought begins to
haunt you, ask yourself, "What can I do in the next five minutes to
improve the situation?" "What about the next five days?", "Five weeks?"
Make a promise to yourself to do it. For example, suppose you
are nervous about being _____________________ for the current
quarter. In this case, the answers to the questions above might be,
"In the next five minutes, I can recalculate the numbers to figure out
how many calls and emails need to be sent out to stay on schedule. "In
the next five days, I can come into the office early to do the
administrative work and then go into sales. "In the next five weeks, I
can work with team leaders to find weakness points."
Rule 6. Become "your own."
Research the company culture. Company culture drives the
behavior of people in the company.
Sometimes the organization formally shapes itself, but more often,
it takes shape naturally. Remember that about 70 percent of layoffs and
terminations are because ______________________________. Speak
the language of those around you. It would be best if you spoke the
company language to everyone. If your boss uses highly technical
terms, actively incorporate those words into your vocabulary.

Task 2. Read the text again and fill in the gaps with the
following phrases. One phrase is odd.
A. regulations that you can violate.
B. the promotion system in your company.
C. go to work every day with one thought in mind.
D. behind the sales target.
E. employees do not fit into the company's culture.
F. to move up the ladder the momen.,
G. create your niche.

Task 3. Match the definitions with their meanings.

1. Professionalism
a) a person is working under an
employment agreement (contract), subject
to the internal labor regulations of an
enterprise (institution)
2. Competence

objects and processes necessary for the
high-quality, productive activity
6. Diligence
f) is a movement, someone's path to
external success, fame, benefits, honor,
accompanying activities in some public
arena

Task 4. Make five sentences, using the words from task 3.
1. Eg.: To increase the chances of career growth, act according
to the principle "Live and learn!" and do not forget to replenish the
piggy bank of knowledge with new information.
2. Eg.: The competencies provide them with an understanding of
what behaviors they should cultivate in the workplace to be valued
and rewarded.
