FOREWORD

Format and Technologies of Teaching Writing is a writing skills book designed
for students at C1 and post C1 levels providing the students with practice in a variety
of language situations in written English, including different types of letters, reviews,
reports, proposals, articles, essays for CAE /CPE/IELTS exams and General English,
including some business or academic settings.

The book is divided into two parts and several units, each focusing on a particular
type of writing format. Each unit contains written texts produced for real academic
situations and covers a range of skills from analyzing the written works, correcting
various types of mistakes to writing students’ own texts addressing the given tasks.
There is a sufficient variety of communicative tasks which allow to develop foreign
language skills. Explanations are kept simple and allow the students to assimilate the
point taught. A summary box is given at the end of each unit which provides a check
for students.

Although it is a writing skills book, there are plenty of opportunities for oral practice
and discussions, both in pairs and groups. Pictures are included to facilitate students’
discussions and provide ideas for writing.

PART 1. REVIEW

I. In this unit you are going to look at several advertisements addressing this
task. Read the task.

[1]

Watch the commercial of the German caffeinated drink trade K-fee
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFsiSxDKgKM] and read the sample review of
the advertisement. Find the adjectives that describe the main features of the
advertisement and its impact on the readers.

The art of advertisement has the best of both worlds. This is a form of art as well as
a marketing trick. A product turnover is closely correlated with its sufficient visual
representation in mass media. Advertising blunder can mean vast sums of money
lost, which is certainly not the case with the German caffeinated drink trade K-fee.
The product has won its place in the world market by maintaining both outstanding
quality and wise advertising policy.

The twenty-second footage of the K-fee advertisement has it all. It is catchy,
humorous, laconic and… absolutely bloodcurdling. The outset reveals an idyllic
picture of countryside scenery. A curved concrete road is rimmed by succulent
green hills. Relaxing music is playing while a white car is driving along the road.
The picture leaves you slightly drowsy. Then all of a sudden the countryside
disappears to reveal a close-up of a zombie face. The female zombie starts
screaming dreadfully leaving you numb, shocked and scared stiff. When the
frightful face disappears, there appears a black background with the company
slogan on it. The slogan reads ‘Ever Been So Wide Awake?’ And there goes the
product name and a sound effect of heartbeat following it.

Skillfully arranged change of images and special effects makes the advertisement a
piece of art. The music takes the lead in creating unique atmosphere, no voice-over
is used. The humor is striking and far from vulgar. This advertisement on the whole
leaves a vivid imprint on the minds of customers.

5

All of this draws us to the conclusion that advertising is the most pleasant form of
customer manipulation. Ingenious and skillful advertisement like this one is a mini
extravaganza not to be missed.

II.
Watch
the
advertisement
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nS7xS8jKy2E] then read the sample answer
addressing the task.

1) What adjectives does the author use to make the picture more vivid?

2) In the task you are asked to give:

Introduction of the advertisement
Description of the plot
Evaluation of the visual impact
Outline of other features
Assessment of the effect

Has the author done all of it? How can you improve the sample answer?

In their strive to attract customers` attention, advert-makers come up with ideas so
original and ingenious that watching an advertisement brings, at times, more
pleasure than watching a show. Abundant special effects, famous actors, gripping
plots, humorous turns of events and catchy slogans – all add up to the effect,
making advertisements stick in our minds and, consequently, making us buy the
products being advertised. My own favourite is “Hamlet Cigars” advertisement
made in Britain in 1987.

The atmosphere of suspense is set from the very beginning. In the absolute dark of
the night, with the moon hiding behind a gothic-looking castle, a bat is flying into a
window. Awe-inspiring music enhances the dramatic effect, and the overwhelming
impression created is that something really frightening is about to happen. The highpitched noises grow louder and in a cloud of mist, the bat turns into…a vampire!
Classic Count Dracula, with his pale face, sharp features, and his coat fluttering in
the wind. He walks determinedly towards the bed, where a beautiful woman is
sleeping. Her beast is open, her tender skin is glowing in the moonlight. The
vampire bends over to plunge his fangs into the young flesh, but suddenly realizes
that he left his teeth next to his coffin! With the deepest frustration on his face, he
understands there is nothing there for him. So he decides to treat himself to a cigar,
the only consolation available at the moment. “Happiness is a cigar called
“Hamlet”, - the slogan conveys the message that you will now associate with the
product itself.

In general, I am convinced that advertisements have become an effective tool in
forming consumers’ tastes and even lifestyles. Being highly artistic, they correlate
