HOW TO STUDY A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

1. Прочитайте и переведите текст.
Learning can be interesting and enjoyable. It all depends on you.

This text points out some basic steps towards good learning.

You should start with positive thinking. Don't tell yourself you can't

do it.

Next you should know your goal. Thus you won't waste time doing

unnecessary work.

Finally, know yourself. Find out which methods of learning are best

for you and use them.

A schedule can save you time and energy. It can keep you from for
getting important things. With a schedule you won't constantly have to decide what to do next. Make out a chart for a full week. Try to estimate how
much time you’ll need for each subject and schedule these times. Weekends are good for working on longer projects or recreation.

When studying foreign languages, it is important to read more for

ideas than for the meaning of isolated words. Try to guess at unfamiliar
words. When you must look up a word, put a mark beside it in your vocabulary. Use the list of marked words as a study list.

Spelling is one subject where mechanical copying can be a good

thing. Keep a list or stack of cards of the words you have misspelled and
want to learn.

The temptation to overload you with facts is strong. But resist it!

What you want are important ideas, not every scrap of information. Whether taking notes in a lecture or class or from a book, keep these rules in
mind: (1) make notes in your own words, (2) condense your information,
(3) always record where your notes come from. This last rule is particularly
important if you are writing a paper.

Study regularly and stay fit. Staying fit means proper diet, recreation

each day, regular exercise and plenty of sleep.

You have some guidelines to follow, but the final results are up to

you. Self-knowledge and self-directions are the real keys to learning.
Knowing how to study will help you in many ways and not only in college.

ABOUT MYSELF

1. Прочитайте и переведите текст.
My name is Ann. My surname or last name is Petrova. I was born on

the 2nd of October in Volgograd. This is the most beautiful city in Russia
situated on the Volga River. Now I am a first-year student at the Volgograd
State Agrarian University. In five years I'll be an agronomist.

I am tall and slim and have fair hair and blue eyes. My friends say that I

am pretty. I think I am just good-looking. I love sports and music. I was very
serious about a career in gymnastics when I was in the 5th form. But then I
broke my arm and doctors didn't let me go in for gymnastics. I love to listen to
modern music and dance. I dance a lot and I hope I am good at it. I also love
swimming. I always swim in the Volga when I have free time.

I would like to tell you about my family. There are five people in our

family. My father's name is Vladimir Stepanovich. He is a mathematician
by education and businessman by profession. My mother's name is Tatyana
Petrovna. She is a housewife. She has much work about the house because
I have a younger sister. She is a pupil. My sister Natasha is in the fifth
form. My grandmother, my mother's mother, lives with us. She is very kind
and helps us a lot.

Our family is very friendly, we have many friends. In summer many

relatives come to visit us.

In May I have finished school No 1 in Volgograd. I did well in all

the subjects but my favourite subjects at school were Physics and Computer
Science. I also enjoyed English lessons.

I am very interested in learning English because I think that the

knowledge of foreign languages helps in everyday life and career.

Two years ago I traveled much around Europe. I have visited France,

Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The
knowledge of English helped me a lot.

As you see, my biography isn't very long yet. But I think I have a

very interesting and good life.

MY HOBBY

1. Прочитайте и переведите текст.
I am very busy now. I don’t have much time to spare. But I have a

hobby which I can’t give up.

A few years ago I started to collect badges. When my father was

a boy he was fond of collecting them. Then he had no time to do it. He
got interested in his studies, and then his work occupied all his time and
mind.

Once I found a box with old badges in the wardrobe under the piles

of clothes. Mother told me about father’s hobby and said that I could take
the box if I wanted.

In the morning when father came he was greatly surprised to see

his collection of badges. He explained me that he had collected symbols
of different countries and cities. He told me how this or that badge appeared in his collection. He said that he was sorry that he had given up
his hobby.

There are people who collect stamps, photos of favourite actors,

posters, videocassettes. I am sure that it is very good when you have some
hobby. It makes your life more interesting and emotional. You widen your
knowledge in the field you are interested in. I admire those who are fond of
repairing radio sets or computers. It’s my wish to find a wife who will enjoy knitting or embroidering.

MY NATIVE CITY: VOLGOGRAD

1. Прочитайте и переведите текст.
Volgograd is the city which is associated with major events in the his
tory of the people. It is the ancient city on the right bank of the River Volga.
The city extends along the right bank of the river it stretches for 70 km.

Tsaritsyn was founded in 1589 as an outpost (fortress) to protect

Russian territory from aggressive nomads. Up to 1925 it was known as
Tsaritsyn. Tsaritsyn played a heroic part in our country's history in 1918.
During the Civil War the Red Army delivered a crushing blow to the White
Guards.

Stalingrad. The name of this city has been forever etched in the his
tory of World War II and the history of the struggle against fascism. During
the Second World War the Soviet Army slopped the advance of the fascism
and dealt them a death blow.

For 200 days and nights life and death struggle continued. The city

laid in ruins. The whole country helped to build it up again.

The battle decided the fate of the Soviet land, the fate of the hu
manity.

The war is the history now, but the memory of those who fought on

the banks of the Volga still lives on the hearts of the sons and daughters. A
majestic war memorial stands on the Mamaev Hill now. In the honour of
the 30th anniversary there was built a Memorial Complex on the Soldiers
Field. An eternal flame burns in memory of all defenders of our city. No
one and nothing have been forgotten.

Peace Street was the first street of the rebuilt city. Today this street

is blocked off by the city Planetarium. There is a majestic bronze figure of
a young woman, holding a globe and a dove in her up raised hand.

You can see broad streets and avenues, squares and shady parks.
The city’s institutes of higher learning graduate doctors and teachers,

engineers and agronomists, lawyers and economists.

Volgograd is a big cultural centre. There are many theatres, museums,

musical schools. In the museums of Volgograd you will find relicts of its
history and military glory, as well as masterpieces of Russian and world art.

Volgograd is a great industrial centre. There are a lot of big plants

and small factories.

My city is justly famed for its hospitability. Every year hundreds of

visitors come to our city from all over the world.

I love my city. I am proud of my city - hero, city - soldier.

Dialogues

1

New-comer: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to the “Druzhba”

hotel? I’m a stranger here, I’ve just arrived in Moscow.

Passer-by: Oh, it’s quite a long way from here.
New-comer: Yes, I know, but my friends advised me to put up at

this hotel.

Passer-by: Your friends are right, it is one of our best hotels. You

may go there by the underground. It’s the quickest way to get there, though
you’ll have to change on to a bus in Lev Tolstoy Square or walk.

New-comer: What bus shall I change on to?
Passer-by: a number 65 or 46 bus will take you to Popov Street. It is

only one stop from the metro station.

New-comer: Thank you very much. Is it possible to get there by

tram or trolley-bus? I haven’t seen anything of Moscow yet and I’ve heard
so much about this beautiful city!

Passer-by: You can get on a № 1 trolley-bus. It will take you as far

as Palace Square where you may get off. When you have admired the wonderful view around you, take a № 10 bus.

New-comer: where must I get off for the “Druzhba” hotel?
Passer-by: In Popov street, but you had better ask the conductor to

put down or you may miss your stop.

New-comer: I’m very much obliged to you.
Passer-by: That’s all right.
