MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME

Warming-up
 What made you take the Master’s Degree Programme?
 What is unique or distinctive about regional studies tasks compared
with other disciplines?
 What range of tasks does regional studies encompass?

Master’s Degree Programme

Master’s degree is awarded students by universities or colleges on completing a course of training, demonstrating mastery in a specific field of
study. Master’s graduates are supposed to possess advanced knowledge of a
specialized body of theoretical and applied topics, skills in analysis, critical
evaluation and ability to solve complex problems.
In Russia a master degree can be obtained after a two-year master
course which is available after a four-year bachelor or a five-year specialist
course. A master degree course can be completely different from the previous one and chosen independently.
During two years of studies master students attend lectures in their profile, choose a faculty advisor and prepare their master thesis which is defended before the certifying commission composed mostly of professors,
headed by the professor from another university.
Master’s degrees are available across various fields of study, including
the arts, business, law, humanities and others. Master’s programmes are offered by top European universities in the UK, France, Germany, Ireland,
Switzerland, Spain, Italy and other countries.
An online master’s degree is a perfect choice for those who cannot
commit to full-time studies and seek to advance their career and education.
Students can study according to their own schedule. Online master’s degrees are becoming more popular and highly regarded. Programmes delivered online are subject to the same vigorous criteria. They are expected to
meet strict academic standards, before approved by the governing body.

To deliver content to students, different platforms can be used: virtual
learning, wikis, blogs, discussion boards and forums, etc.
In the early 1990s Novosibirsk State Technical University was among
the first higher educational establishments to introduce a multi-level system
of education and opened its master-level degree programmes in 1994/95
academic year.
The academic staff of the Department of Humanities is engaged in active research in almost all the branches of science. Advanced seminars are
conducted for graduate students each semester. Conferences in many areas
of active research are often held in the department. Personal guidance is
provided for each graduate student.
The programme is made up of a specified number of required and elective courses. The majors, i.e. subjects chosen as a field of specialization,
are … and … are also chosen as elective courses.
After 2 years of studies in the Master’s programme students submit their
master thesis, which is a written work containing the results of research in a
specified field.
As for me I chose …. The theme of my research is …. The central goal
of my study is …. The object of my study is …. I hope my research will
result in ….

Education at a Graduate Level in the UK and the USA

The contemporary world is becoming more and more integrated and
interdependent. It suggests mutual communication and cooperation not only
in the field of commerce, finance and science but also in the sphere of education.
The Continuing Education Programme abroad provides the opportunities for scientists, engineers, managers, teachers, health-care workers and
other professionals to update and extend their knowledge as well as competence in their chosen fields. Graduation from prestigious higher educational
institutions of the UK and the USA allows a graduate to make a name in the
world of science or business, establish contacts with the authorities in the
chosen fields and pursue a career at the international level.
Students benefit from a wide choice of study modes, including full-time,
part-time or collaborative learning. Full-time students are required to attend
lectures, seminars. They are usually assigned a personal tutor responsible
for academic progress and non-academic affairs. Part-time students are ex
pected to receive tuition and be in attendance for up to half the hours a week
applicable to full-time students for similar programmes.
Graduate programmes are divided into Master’s programmes and doctoral ones. Master’s degree programmes lead to the degrees of MSc, MA,
MBA, MPhil and others. Doctoral programmes are subdivided into research
ones, leading to the PhD and professional ones, resulting in the degrees of
DBA, EdD, MD and some others. Master degree is usually awarded for successful passing examination and submitting a dissertation project. Doctorate
is awarded for presenting and defending the doctoral dissertation.

Admission Guidelines for Graduate Applicants

The main responsibility of graduate school is to offer doctoral programmes. Although the amount of time required to complete the PhD can
depend on whether or not the student holds a Master’s degree at the time of
enrollment, the nature of the dissertation project and other factors, some
general guidelines apply to all students who pursue a doctorate.
Besides the courses in majors, students may take courses in foreign languages, statistics, computer languages and other skills essential to research
in a given discipline. Once the student has successfully completed course
work, qualifying examinations and special requirements, he or she is certified as a candidate for the PhD The final step is to write and defend the doctoral dissertation.
It may take as little as three years to receive the PhD, but most students
finish in four to six. Students are actively involved in planning their doctoral
programmes. They help plan and participate in colloquia, national and international conferences, research projects and other activities.
Admission to doctoral programmes is competitive. The applicant must
hold a Bachelor’s degree and he is required to take the Graduate Record
Examination (GRE). Some professional programmes (e.g., management and
law) require specialized admission tests including the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and the Law School Admissions Test
(LSAT). All international students are expected to submit a satisfactory
score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Statement of Purpose

A statement of purpose is a statement of goals in the form of a short essay that a university entrant has to compose in order to introduce himself to

the admission committee. It is intended to show his previous education,
work experience, career and academic goals as well as the factors that have
influenced the choice of a profession or major. Such a statement is commonly required for research or academic purpose. The requirement is to
provide a clear description of intent, in context with the academic requirements of the institution or organization. An intern, for example, could be
required to provide this information in context with work. The statement of
purpose should be viewed by students as a good opportunity to set out goals
and make clear the importance and relationship of the academic situation to
readers. It is strongly advised to consider in detail the structure and content
of the statement of purpose prior to drafting.

Tips for Writing a Statement of Purpose

1. Be honest. Essay evaluators can read between lines. Do not underestimate them.
2. Write an essay yourselves. Do not ask to get an expert or friend to
write for you. If the admission officers suspect fraud, the application will be
thrown out.
3. Evaluate rather than narrate. It is important to discuss what you have
learned. Do not “tell stories”.
4. Be logical. Each paragraph should follow logically from the previous one.
5. Focus on specific points which show your unique personality. Avoid
general statements.
6. Be positive. Never complain about your school, family, country.
7. Keep the language simple. Avoid quotes, do not use flowery language. The examiner wants to hear your words.
8. Keep it short. Coincise writing is always appreciated. Use shorter
words where possible.
9. Avoid repetitions.
10. Pay attention to detail. Use 12 point font. Use a simple font such as
Times New Roman. Justify the text, i.e. align to both left and right margins.
