Введение

Данное пособие составлено в соответствии с рабочей програм
мой по дисциплине «Английский язык» и предназначено для студен
тов по специальностям: «Экономика, бухгалтерский учет и анализ», 

«Производственный менеджмент и государственное муниципальное 

управление».

Тексты, предложенные для студентов, строго структурированы с 

учетом аксиологии креативности современного отечественного обра
зования, в них большое внимание уделяется упражнениям на изучение 

специальной лексики и экономической терминологии, что поможет 

студентам в будущей профессиональной деятельности стать квали

Task 1. Read this list of customs in the USA. Are they the same or 

different in Russia? Check S (similar) or D (different)

1. People are usually punctual for appointments. In fact, most people 

arrive slightly early.

2. Business meetings are friendly, but even so, there isn't much so
cializing beforehand.

3. Lunch is usually a fairly light meal that doesn't last long.
4. Both men and women shake hands when introduced.
5. It's common to ask people you meet what kind of work they do.
6. Many people eat dinner early in the evening, around 6:00 p.m.
7. People generally talk quite a bit while they're eating dinner.
8. It's not uncommon for couples to display affection in public.
9. When invited to someone's home, you're not necessarily expected to 

bring a gift. Even so, something small, such as flowers or dessert, is always 
appreciated. 

10. Most people open gifts as soon as they receive them.

Task 3. How important are the following things when doing

1.2. UNDERSTANDING CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

Each society has its own beliefs, attitudes, customs, behaviors, and 

social habits. These give people a sense of who they are, how they are 
supposed to behave, and what they should or should not do.

People become conscious of such rules when they meet people from 

different cultures. For example, the rules about when to eat vary from culture to culture. Many North Americans and Europeans organize their 
timetables around three mealtimes a day. In other countries, on the other 
hand, it's not the custom to have strict rules like this – people eat when they 
want to, and every family has its own timetable.

When people visit or live in a country for the first time, they are often 

surprised at the differences that exist between their own culture and the 
culture in the other country. For some people, traveling abroad is the thing 
they enjoy most in life; for others, though, cultural differences make them 
feel uncomfortable, frightened, or even insecure. This is known as «culture 
shock».

When you're visiting a foreign country, it is important to understand 

and appreciate cultural differences. This can help people avoid misunderstandings, develop friendships more easily, and feel more comfortable when 
traveling or living abroad.

Here are several things to do in order to avoid culture shock.
1. Avoid quick judgments; try to understand people in another culture 

from their own point of view.

2. Become aware of what is going on around you and why.
3. Don't think of your cultural habits as «right» and other people's as 

«wrong».

4. Be willing to try new things and to have new experiences.
5. Try to appreciate and understand other people's values.
6. Think about your own culture and how it influences your attitudes 

and actions.

7. Avoid having negative stereotypes about foreigners and cultures.
8. Show interest in as well as respect, sincerity, acceptance, and con
cern for things that are important to other people.

Task 1. Advice about business customs
Read this e-mail.
To: Mr. Brendan Dunn
From: Marta Alvarez
Subject: Your trip to Colombia
Dear Mr. Dunn:
You asked about Colombian business customs, and it's my pleasure to 

give you some advice to help you during your first trip to Colombia.

Colombia is a hot country, but men should wear dark-colored suits, 

white shirts, and ties to work.

Business cards are very important. Your card should be in English on 

one side, and in Spanish on the other. Don't leave meetings quickly. You 
should stay and have some non-business small talk before you go.

You should schedule meetings two to three weeks in advance. Don't 

make back-to-back appointments. You should leave two to three hours 
between meetings.

Use this e-mail about business customs in Colombia as a model. 

Write an e-mail message to your American business associate about 
business customs in Russia. Some possible topics to include are: business cards; greetings and introductions; meeting manners; conversation topics; business entertaining; clothing; table manners; weather.

Then write an e-mail message to your American business associate 

asking about business customs in the USA.

Task 2. Family council
Work in small groups (3 to 4 students). Role-play the situations.
Group A: your Russian family would like to have an exchange 

American student live with you. Discuss ideas on advantages and disadvantages of this decision.
