A Coincidence A coincidence is an occasion when two or more things happen at the same time in an unusual or surprising way. Most people have experienced coincidences. For example, a friend may telephone you at the exact moment you were thinking about him. Coincidences happen all the time, but few have been as remarkable as the one experienced by King Umberto I of Italy. On 28 July 1900 King Umberto went into a restaurant in Monza. He was very surprised to fi nd that the restaurant owner, who was also called Umberto, looked and spoke exactly like him. It was soon discovered that they were both born in Turin on the same day. Th e restaurant owner had married a woman called Margherita, which was also the name of the Queen whom King Umberto had married on the same day. What is more, the owner had opened his restaurant on the day of King’s coronation. Th e King was so impressed that he invited the owner to an athletics meeting the following day. Unfortunately, Umberto the restaurant owner died in a mysterious shooting accident that morning. Later that same day, King Umberto I was shot dead by an anarchist. (David McKeegan. U n it T W O I. Прочитайте текст. The Tunguska Explosion At 7.17 in the morning, on the 30th of June 1908, there was an enormous explosion in the Tunguska region of Siberia. It destroyed around 40,000 trees in a circular area of about 15,400 sq km. Th e force of the explosion was felt all over the world. Th at night in Siberia was known as the “White Night”. It did not get dark because the sky was fi lled with bright silvery clouds. Even in London it was possible to read at midnight because the sky was so light. At the same time in other parts of Europe photographs could be taken without the use of a fl ash. How did it happen? Even today nobody knows for sure. Some suggested that it was a UFO crash. Others thought that it was a meteorite. But when things fall to the Earth from space they leave huge holes in the ground, called craters — and there was no crater in Tunguska. Th e most widely accepted explanation today is that it was a comet. A comet is a huge ball of dirty ice that fl ies through space, trailing a tail of dust behind it. If a piece of a comet broke off and entered the Earth’s atmosphere, it would heat up and explode before it actually landed. Th e explosion would be huge, but it would leave very little evidence of itself behind. Possibly just a cloud of silvery dust. (David McKeegan. First Certifi cate Pass Key. Grammar Practice with Key. — Oxford : Heinemann ELT, 1998. P. 13.)
