islets, and one islet close associated with two ganglia; few endocrine cells in the nerve fibre and a single cell or few endocrine cells into the nerve bundles; and nerve endings in close proximity to islets of Langerhans or single endocrine cells. Such types of NIC were described in our previous studies [2,3]. In addition, the analysis of threedimensional reconstructions allowed us to identify the mixed type of NIC (one islet of Langerhans integrated with up to 2 NIC I and 3 NIC II simultaneously). The greatest number of such complexes was observed in the central part of the pancreas, while in the periphery they were not detected. These complexes were a very large size. In the middle fetal period (two fetuses, 20 gw), all of the described above NIC types were also detected. Moreover, the NIC of “transitional” type (a ganglion that passed there processes toward different islets) was revealed. Using the 3-D analysis, it was detected that one ganglion can give several of their processes to several different islets. Thus, a dense network was formed in which neural structures and islets of Langerhans were interconnected. However, by the end of middle fetal period (27 gw), the number of such complexes per pancreatic volume decreased and neural network became more sparse. In the late fetal (32 and 37gw) and early postnatal periods, few NIC I were revealed mainly in the interlobular connective tissue. However, the ganglia in such NIC were smaller in size then in NIC I during the early and middle fetal periods. This study confirms our assumption [3] that NIC can play a role in the formation of pancreatic neuro-endocrine functions and participate in the islets morphogenesis.
